Possible Investigations

Investigations

- Core temperature should be less than 35 ‘C. Core temperature can be checked orally,
- rectally and even at the axilla.

- The pupils would be constricted and unresponsive. Exception for severe hypothermia.

- Use tendon hammer to perform a tendon jerk ( reflexes )



Mini Mental State Examination

What is it ?
- a commonly used “ tool “ for screening patients cognitive function

What does it involve ?
- questions and instructions each carrying marks adding up to a total of 30 marks.

How to evaluate scores?
- scores of 25-30 : normal
- scores of 21-24 : mild
- scores of 10-20 : moderate
- scores of <10 : severe


- While questions are asked, notes need to be taken on Appearance , Speech , Mood , Thought Content , Perception


- Appearance :
general appearance, facial expressions, movements, social interaction


- Speech :
Slurred? Spontaneity ? Speed of answers? Tone? etc.

- Mood :
Sad? Happy? Nervous? Anxious? Fearful ? etc.

- Thought Content :
Stream?

- Perception :
Possible illusions? hallucinations? deja vu?

The reason we should do the MMSE is to see if her cognitive functions is impaired.
Or if she would need further social support from her friends or family members.
