PCL 5 - Pathophysiology CTS (Gurki)

What is carpal tunnel syndrome?
- A syndrome where the median nerve (the only nerve that passes through the carpal tunnel) is compressed. As a result of this, parathesia is stumbled upon.

Pathophysiology of carpal tunnel syndrome.
Anything pressing on the median nerve can cause CTS. The tendons passing through the carpal tunnel can become swollen (tenosynovium) from doing the same movement over and over, like typing on a computer or playing video games or a musical instrument for long periods of time. It's more common in gymnasts, particularly those who do a lot of handstands, and in people who play racquet sports, like tennis.
During pregnancy the body will produce roughly 50% more blood and fluids than normal to accommodate the growing baby. This can contribute to swelling and bloating.

*Kidney failure does not aaply here because swelling only happens in the legs and ankles.
*Heart failure does not apply here because heart failure to pump blood out (which causes fluid retention) would cause collection of fluids at legs, ankles and lungs. Use diuretic drugs to treat.
*These diseases include amyloidosis, sarcoidosis, multiple myeloma, and leukemia.
